The Island of Ruegen
Since 2008, the Island of Ruegen, which lies in the Strelasund and is Germany’s largest and most beautiful island, is connected to the mainland town of Stralsund not only by the Ruegendamm (causeway) but also by the new bridge. Ruegen is famous for its tree-lined roads, the white chalk cliffs and bright yellow fields of rape. In addition to the charming, classical sea resort architecture, the island has a 140 km length of coastline, with endless, white sandy beaches. With a surface area of more than 974 km², Ruegen is 10 times the size of Sylt and has only three times the population! Not only the local inhabitants but also the constantly increasing number of guests and visitors to the island enjoy more than 1700 hours of sunshine per year – that is almost 200 hours more than is average throughout Germany. The pleasant Baltic Sea climate is considered to be particularly therapeutic – here you can catch your breath, relax and unwind.
Independent of the season, there are so many new discoveries to be made from Altefaehr to Moenchgut and so many lasting impressions to be gained – some of the unique natural landmarks such as the chalk cliffs, the untouched Isle of Vilm in the Greifswalder Bodden, the dense beech forests or, in the deep woods of Stubnitz, steeped in legend, the dark green waters of the Hertasee, leave a permanent impact.
Ruegen’s most renowned landmark, the chalk cliffs, lie in the north east of the island and are the subject of a famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich. On the naturally stony beach below the cliffs belemnites and hagstones or even pieces of amber can be found– ideal souvenirs to remind you of your stay. In addition, you should not miss the view from the famous Koenigsstuhl (King’s Seat) – look out over the many ships and boats to the horizon.
